🎥 Watch the Replay of Connected by Faith, Not by Location: Redefining Church in the Modern Age
In my sermon, I emphasized digital platforms’ vital role in reaching out to those distant from God. What’s the point of attending a physical church if it doesn’t truly transform us? The vision for our church is to embrace the digital age, using every tool at our disposal to help souls find their way back to God.
Next, I reminded everyone of the significant role technology has always played in Christianity. Remember the roads built by the Roman Empire? Those very roads played a pivotal role in spreading the Gospel. This led me to introduce an idea I’ve been pondering – the possibility of divine connections through digital means. And yes, we’ll dive deeper into this in upcoming sermons.
Additionally, I fervently believe that nothing, not physical barriers, should come between us and our worship of God. I took everyone back to Acts chapter 2, where early Christians built a thriving community without the trappings of physical structures.
It’s fascinating to think that it was over 330 years after Christ’s passing before physical church buildings even appeared. To me, this underscores the true essence of the church: community. Even though I haven’t met many of you face-to-face, I feel a deep bond with our congregation. This also reminded me of the unparalleled value of our personal moments with God.
Driving the point home, I stressed how crucial it is to harness modern technology, especially the internet, to spread Christianity. Just as early Christians utilized Roman roads for the Gospel, we have a golden opportunity to use the internet as our “Roman Road,” reaching hearts worldwide.
It’s intriguing to think that while many internet pioneers might not know Jesus, they’ve unknowingly given us a platform to spread His love and teachings. I wrapped up my sermon by teasing some exciting tech-driven initiatives we’re launching to bring more souls closer to Jesus.
Key takeaways (YouTube Timestamps)
The sermon emphasizes the importance of leveraging technology to spread the word of God and maintain a divine connection with Him, even if we are not physically present in a church.
The sermon begins by questioning the effectiveness of traditional church attendance, especially if there is no noticeable change in the attendees’ lives ([21:56]). It suggests that a digital connection to God can be just as effective, if not more so, than a physical one.
The sermon then discusses how the early Christians used the Roman roads, a technological advancement of their time, to spread the message of Jesus ([24:14]). This is used as an analogy to encourage the use of modern technology, like the internet, to spread the word of God today ([26:29]).
The sermon also emphasizes that physical walls do not limit God’s presence and should not limit our worship ([18:45]). This reinforces the idea that a digital connection to God can be as meaningful as a physical one.
Finally, the sermon encourages personal time with God, suggesting that this is when God truly speaks to us ([21:06]). This further supports the idea of a digital connection, as it allows for personal time with God, regardless of physical location.
In conclusion, the sermon encourages us to embrace technology as a tool to maintain a divine connection with God, just as the early Christians used the technology of their time to spread the word of God.
Daily Devotional
Day 1: “God Can’t Be Boxed, But Are You Boxing Him In?”
Reading: Acts 17:24-25
Devotional: Start your week contemplating the omnipresence of God. The day’s scripture reminds us God isn’t contained within walls or rituals. How does this truth impact your relationship with Him? Take a moment to ponder whether you’ve limited God to specific areas of your life.
Reflection Question: “In which corners of your life have you boxed God in? How can you expand His ‘living space’ in your daily walk?”
Day 2: “The Shape-Shifting Savior: Adapting to Share Christ”
Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
Devotional: Today’s focus is on adaptability in spreading the Gospel. As you ponder the scripture, consider how you can become a bridge to different people to bring them closer to Christ. What tools and platforms can you use to share the love of God effectively?
Reflection Question: “What’s one way you can adapt your approach to share the Gospel in a manner that resonates with someone different from you?”
Day 3: “Zooming Into Faith: Keeping Community Close in a Distant World”
Reading: Hebrews 10:24-25
Devotional: Community and connectedness take center stage in today’s reading. How do we ensure our spiritual circles remain intact and nourishing despite our rapidly changing world? Dedicate today to pray for your community and explore ways to enrich these connections.
Reflection Question: “Who in your faith community needs encouragement or connection today, and what specific step can you take to strengthen that bond?”
Day 4: “Microphones Not Required: The Untechnological Truth of the Early Church”
Reading: Acts 2:42-47
Devotional: Reflect on the essence of the church as a community. Today’s scripture highlights that the early believers thrived without modern amenities like buildings or technology. What does this teach us about being the church today?
Reflection Question: “If all the church buildings disappeared tomorrow, what actions would you take to embody the essence of the church in your community?”
Day 5: “Your Digital Footprints, God’s Divine Fingerprints”
Reading: Acts 17:24-25; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
Devotional: As we wrap up the week, look at the overarching messages. How can your digital footprint lead to opportunities for divine connection? In what ways can technology serve as a vessel to bring people closer to God? Spend some time in prayer, seeking God’s guidance on using technology to broaden His reach.
Reflection Question: “How can your digital presence be a beacon for those searching for God? Name one step you can take this week to make that a reality.

Our journey with Mars Hill Baptist Church has taken us through its early establishment, highlighting its foundational pillars of faith, community, and innovation. As we proceed further into this third chapter, we’ll explore the synergy between age-old traditions and the dynamic digital realm presented by “Mars Hill Anywhere.”
Mars Hill Anywhere: The Dawn of a Digital Renaissance
The 21st century brought about a digital revolution, connecting global communities. Mars Hill responded by integrating faith into this evolving landscape.
The innovative “Mars Hill Anywhere” platform was more than a technological advancement. It accurately represented the church’s noble mission to enable people from every corner of the world to participate in worship without any barriers or hindrances.
As we delve deeper, we’ll understand how this broad vision transformed into a tangible, hybrid worship experience.
A Seamless Fusion: The Hybrid Worship Experience
The innovative platform of “Mars Hill Anywhere” sought to transcend mere online broadcasts.
By fostering an environment of genuine spiritual engagement, attendees found a sanctuary where they could actively participate in live worship, fervent prayers, and applicable bible studies.
This digital outreach dismantled conventional geographical confines, paving the way for Mars Hill’s message to resonate across continents.
But how did this virtual congregation foster a tangible sense of community? Our next segment uncovers the church’s strategies.
Cultivating Digital Connections: Nurturing the Virtual Flock
The Mars Hill Anywhere community enables us to unite more centrally and meaningfully, regardless of digital boundaries.
To address potential gaps, we implemented virtual fellowships, personalized counseling sessions, and a wide range of spiritually uplifting content.
Additionally, we demonstrate our commitment by dedicating a dedicated team (Digital Pastors) to guide and support the online community.
These efforts have not gone unnoticed, as the response to this initiative has been overwhelmingly positive, with heartwarming stories emerging from all around the globe.
Voices from Afar: Testimonials of Boundless Impact
Soldiers stationed in far-flung, war-torn regions and missionaries serving in isolated, underserved areas have shared touching accounts about the life-changing influence of “Mars Hill Anywhere.”
As these stories show, our digital platform has had a broad outreach and significant impact. Mars Hill has achieved a lot, but its forward-thinking vision also promises an exhilarating future.
Envisioning Tomorrow: Mars Hill Anywhere’s Prospective Ventures
Energized by the global embrace of “Mars Hill Anywhere,” many churches are venturing into newer technological realms.
With discussions around AI, virtual reality-enhanced church experiences, and the development of personalized spiritual mobile applications, the future seems radiant, with Mars Hill at the forefront of marrying faith with cutting-edge technology.
As we draw this chapter to a close, let’s take a moment to reflect on Mars Hill’s overarching narrative in this transformative digital era.
Epilogue: An Unyielding Commitment in an Ever-evolving Digital Landscape
Throughout its history, Mars Hill Baptist Church has shown impressive adaptability in combining its long-standing traditions with changing societal and technological trends.
Our church’s seamless integration of physical and digital aspects serves as a model for other religious organizations, demonstrating Mars Hill’s unwavering commitment to its mission.
We eagerly anticipate the joy of worshiping with you online on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at 10:30 AM Central.
Remember, regardless of how you choose to participate—whether in person or online—the power of our collective worship transcends physical boundaries, uniting us as one body in Christ.
Be there. Be part of the legacy. Let’s write the next chapter of Mars Hill together.
In this sermon, I encouraged the congregation to spiritually wave away their worries and troubles, reminding them that their struggles will end in the morning.
I then delved into the history of our church, Mars Hill Missionary Baptist Church, founded by Pastor Clarence E. Stowers, Sr., and 17 other believers. I emphasized the importance of each individual’s unique contribution, likening it to a thread in a garment. Pulling one thread could unravel the entire garment, just as removing one believer could destabilize the church.
I then discussed Matthew 19:26, our church’s motto, which states that God makes all things possible. This verse was particularly significant during the turbulent times of the civil rights movement when the church was founded.
In the second part of my sermon, I shared my journey to becoming a pastor, from resisting the call while in college to finally accepting it after meeting my wife.
I discussed the challenges of transitioning into the role of pastor after my father’s passing and the wisdom he imparted to me about leading the church. I emphasized the importance of consistency in preaching and competence in actions.
I concluded the sermon by encouraging the congregation to see every ending as a new beginning in disguise, using the church’s growth and reach as an example. I reminded them that even in times of chaos and instability, God is always at work, creating new beginnings.
Key takeaways (YouTube Timestamps)
Every individual’s contribution to the church is significant; removing one can destabilize the entire church. [01:50
With God, all things are possible. This belief can provide hope and strength during turbulent times. [12:07]
Consistency in preaching and competence in actions are crucial for leading a church. [31:51]
Every ending is often a new beginning in disguise. Even in times of chaos and instability, God is creating new beginnings. [33:24]
The church’s mission is not limited to the physical building but extends to reaching people worldwide. [37:09]
Daily Devotional
Day 1: Faith isn’t a moment; it’s a legacy. Stand firm and watch mountains move.
Unwavering faith is the thread that holds everything together. It is the force that allows us to face challenges and overcome obstacles. It is the belief that with God, all things are possible. This faith is a personal conviction and a collective strength that can build a legacy and withstand all odds [01:50].
Bible Passage: Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Reflection: Reflect on a time when your faith was tested. How did you rely on your unwavering faith to overcome this challenge? Day 2: God’s call isn’t about comfort; it’s a divine draft into purpose. Are you in the game or on the sidelines? The call to serve is a burning desire that cannot be ignored. It is a divine assignment that requires sacrifice, commitment, and obedience. This call may come at unexpected times and may require us to step out of our comfort zones, but it is a call that leads to a fulfilling and purposeful life [30:46]. Bible Passage: 1 Peter 4:10 – “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Reflection: How have you responded to God’s call to serve in your life? What sacrifices have you made to fulfill this call? Day 3: Lead with consistency, shine with competence. Are you lighting the way or just holding the torch? Consistency and competence are key to effective leadership. They build trust, credibility, and respect among those we lead. As leaders, we must strive to be consistent in our actions and competent in our roles to effectively guide and inspire others [31:51]. Bible Passage: Proverbs 16:3 – “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” Reflection: How have you demonstrated consistency and competence in your leadership roles? How has this impacted those you lead? Day 4: Your growth might make old friends squint. Shine anyway. Familiarity can sometimes breed contempt. Those who have known us long may find accepting our growth and transformation hard. However, this must not deter us from fulfilling our purpose and calling [34:42]. Bible Passage: Mark 6:4 – “Jesus said to them, ‘A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.’” Reflection: Have you experienced challenges due to familiarity? How have you overcome these challenges? Day 5: When one door closes, God’s drafting blueprints. Are you ready for the grand tour?
Every ending often disguises a new beginning. When one chapter closes, another one opens. We must not fear endings but embrace them as opportunities for new beginnings. We can navigate these transitions with faith and courage and look forward to what God has in store for us [36:03]. Bible Passage: Isaiah 43:19 – “See, I am doing something new! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Reflection: Reflect on a recent ending in your life. How can you view this as a new beginning?

Mars Hill Baptist Church: Continuing the Legacy
In our previous post, we embarked on a journey through the early days of Mars Hill Baptist Church, a sanctuary of faith, hope, and community nestled in the heart of Chicago. As we delve deeper into this continuation, we’ll uncover more facets of this remarkable institution, highlighting its growth, outreach, and the modern touches that make it a beacon in Chicago’s religious landscape.
Innovative Outreach: Beyond the Church Walls Mars Hill’s vision has always transcended its physical boundaries. One of its groundbreaking initiatives was the bus ministry, a transformative outreach inspired by Jack Hyles and the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana. This wasn’t merely a transport service; it was a mission to bring children from the inner city to Sunday school, planting seeds of faith and hope. By 1982, Mars Hill’s commitment to education and community led to the inception of a school, resulting in a surge in membership, reaching about 850 souls by 1992.
Transition and Transformation: A New Era The dawn of the late 1990s heralded a significant transition for Mars Hill. With the leadership baton passed, Clarence E. Stowers, Jr., the founder’s son, emerged as a beacon of youthful energy and innovation. The untimely passing of Rev. Stowers Sr. in 1999 propelled the younger Stowers into leadership, marking a revitalization, growth, and transformation period for Mars Hill.
Diversifying Ministries: Catering to a Dynamic Congregation Mars Hill expanded its horizons under Clarence E. Stowers, Jr.’s visionary leadership. By spring 2001, the church had birthed several new ministries. Mars Hill was moving from the Basketball ministry for sports enthusiasts to the Music ministry for budding talents. One standout event was the “Taste of Mars Hill,” a testament to Mars Hill’s commitment to community, faith, and fellowship.
Embracing Modernity: A Progressive Approach While Mars Hill Baptist Church is steeped in tradition, it has always been forward-thinking. Recognizing the evolving dynamics of worship and the diverse needs of its congregation, the church made bold moves. Shorter, concise services were introduced, and the traditional pulpit was removed, symbolizing Mars Hill’s commitment to blending tradition with modern worship methods.
Looking Ahead: The Dawn of Mars Hill Anywhere Mars Hill recognized the need to evolve as the world became more interconnected and digital. The church began envisioning a model to cater to its in-person congregation and growing online community. This vision led to “Mars Hill Anywhere,” a hybrid church model that seamlessly blends physical and digital worship experiences. This innovative approach ensures that no matter where someone is, they can be a part of the Mars Hill community, partaking in worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth.
Conclusion: A Legacy Continued and a Glimpse into the Future As we wrap up this second installment on Mars Hill Baptist Church, it’s evident that its journey is a harmonious blend of tradition, innovation, faith, and community outreach. From its humble beginnings in 1963 to its current hybrid model, Mars Hill continues to inspire and nurture souls.
Stay tuned for Part 3, where we’ll delve deeper into the evolution of “Mars Hill Anywhere” and explore how the church has seamlessly transitioned into a hybrid model, catering to its in-person and online communities.
