Have you ever been distracted at church even when you came wanting to worship God? Distractions during worship can minimize the powerful impact worship can have. We are easily distracted people. Upon further reflection, I’ve come to believe we have a very low tolerance for distractions (including pastors). Additionally, I’ve discovered that pastoring a large church presents its fair amount of distractions and challenges. It has been said that “confession is good for the soul.” Therefore, it’s confession time for me.
One of the greatest distractions for me: CELL PHONES.
Each week during the sermon I hear cell phones ringing. I wonder how many of these calls have been emergencies?
Let me guess – PROBABLY ZERO!
Cell phones are a great tool for communication but please consider how important it is to get that “important” phone call during church, a movie or anything else where the phone can be a horrible distraction to others. God may speak to you during worship; however, he won’t call you on your cell phone. Here are some alternatives; silent/vibrate mode, off button or leave the darn thing in your car.
While you’re at it go ahead and take the Bluetooth earpiece out of your ear…
it looks ridiculous during worship.
What REALLY gets me is when multiple phones ring. Even though I typically put my phone on vibrate in the car on my way to church, if I hear a phone ring during service, I'm automatically checking to make sure mine is on vibrate or silent.
I am also distracted by too much walking. Can you honestly not stay in one spot for 2 hours? Even less than that if you get there 30 minutes last. I even hate when I myself have to do too much walking, like at this funeral Monday. I started out in the choir stand. Then the crowd got so big that i had to set up the camera so ppl could view the service in the over flow. Then I had to work the mics, and I even found myself seating people. I just know i was a distraction to some one, because I would have been distracted had it been some one else.
Well Stated!!!!
I will have to say that the bluetooth is probably my husbands biggest distraction. LOL
i totally agree pastor…the bluetooth is probably the biggest distraction. How about you sitting behind someone with a bluetooth and their phone vibrates and all of sudden they are talking to themselves. I always wonder are they praying to God until i see that little light blinking and hear them say "okay goodbye." I just wanna pop them up side the head and take that thing off their ear. My phone is always on silent on my drive to church and folks better hope i remember to turn it back up after church. I never wanna anyone to keep me from getting my blessing.
