The Gift You Didn’t Expect: How Unexpected Blessings Shape Our Lives

The Gift You Didn’t Expect: How Unexpected Blessings Shape Our Lives

Introduction: A Gift Wrapped in Surprise

Isn’t it frustrating when you think you’ve made yourself clear but end up with something completely different? Why does it feel like life often does this to us?

Picture this: it’s your birthday or Christmas. You’ve been hinting at what you want for weeks, circling items in catalogs, sending links, and even mentioning it during conversations. The big day arrives, and you eagerly rip into the box, only to discover something entirely different—not what you expected.

Perhaps it’s a book about patience or a toolset you have no clue how to use. Feeling disappointed, you set it aside, uncertain of its purpose in your life.

However, a situation arises weeks later where that “unwanted” gift becomes precisely what you need. The book helps you navigate a challenging situation gracefully, or the toolset fixes an unexpected problem. It wasn’t what you asked for, but it was just right. Isn’t that often how life works?

This is precisely how God works in our lives. His answers don’t always look like what we expect, but they are precisely what we need. What if the answer you’ve rejected is God’s best gift for you?

Jesus’ arrival into the world—so unexpected and unconventional—was the greatest gift humanity could ever receive. It teaches us a profound truth: sometimes, the gift you didn’t expect is the one you needed the most.

You Thought You Knew What You Needed, But God Had Other Plans

The Israelites of Jesus’ time were waiting for a king—an influential, mighty figure ready to overthrow their Roman oppressors. They sought a warrior to take up the sword and reclaim their sovereignty.

They expected a conqueror with a crown, but instead, He came wearing swaddling clothes with a message that was more about love than power. Instead, they got a baby born in a manger to a young, unmarried woman in a small town. This baby wasn’t housed in a palace but was placed in a humble stable.

Shepherds—considered the lowest in society—were the first to hear of His birth. Jesus didn’t come with a sword; He came with love, humility, and a message of peace.

In Luke 2:10-11 (NLT), the angel announces:

Don’t be afraid! I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, David!

God’s plan defied all human logic. Jesus’ ministry focused on the least, the lost, and the broken, not the elite or powerful. This wasn’t what people expected, but it was precisely what they needed: a Savior who understood their struggles, a King who led by serving, and a Messiah who brought eternal hope rather than temporary relief.

When What You Get Isn’t What You Asked For

How often do we overlook God’s blessings because they don’t look like we imagined? Isn’t it true that we want God to fit in our box, but He’s too big?

Maybe it’s time we break down those boxes. We tend to form rigid expectations about how life should unfold—how our prayers should be answered. We pray for financial help; instead, God teaches us a lesson in contentment.

We ask for healing, and instead, God strengthens us to endure. We seek instant relief, and instead, God gives us gradual growth.

Isaiah 55:8 (NLT) says:

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”

The challenge isn’t God’s plan; it’s our expectations.

The Israelites expected a king with power and influence. Instead, they received a humble Savior who grew up in an unassuming town, worked as a carpenter, and spent time with the outcasts. The gift didn’t look like they imagined—but it was precisely what humanity needed.

So, what expectations must you release to fully embrace God’s plan for your life? Where do you need to pray for trust in God’s timing today?

One of the hardest lessons is adjusting our expectations to align with God’s plan. Releasing control is an act of faith, a declaration that we trust God’s goodness over our limited understanding.

Trusting God, Even When It Doesn’t Make Sense

Letting Go of Your Timeline

We often disappoint ourselves when life doesn’t unfold according to our timeline or vision. We want things to go smoothly, success without setbacks, and blessings without waiting. But God’s timeline is rarely ours, and His ways are often wrapped in surprises.

I remember when I was desperate for a career breakthrough—I had a clear idea of what I wanted and when I enjoyed it. But door after door closed. It wasn’t until I let go of my need for control and trusted God’s timing that I saw something better open up. By releasing our expectations, we open ourselves to experiencing God’s plans, which often exceed our wildest hopes.

Ephesians 3:20 (NLT) says:

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.

We often disappoint ourselves when life doesn’t unfold according to our timeline or vision. We want things to go smoothly, success without setbacks, and blessings without waiting. But God’s timeline is rarely ours, and His ways are often wrapped in surprises.

Do you believe God’s unexpected plans for you are better than anything you could imagine? It’s a bold question that requires faith to answer.

Take a moment today and choose one expectation you’ve been holding tightly onto—an expectation that might be limiting your view of God’s goodness. Actively surrender it to Him. Ask Him for help, trust His plan, and pray for His will daily.

Seeking Clarity, Not Control

When faced with the unknown, it’s natural to want control. We want to dictate the outcome, the timing, and the means. But God calls us to a different posture of humility and trust. Instead of demanding control, what if we asked for clarity?

What if you trusted that God was doing something far beyond your understanding instead of trying to control every outcome?

The question becomes: Am I asking God for understanding, or am I trying to control how He answers my prayers? When we ask for clarity, we acknowledge our dependence on God and trust in His wisdom.

Take time today to pray for clarity in one specific area of your life, and trust that God is guiding you even when the whole picture isn’t visible.

One of the hardest lessons is adjusting our expectations to align with God’s plan.

Finding Joy in the Unexpected

Finally, one of the most potent shifts we can make is learning to celebrate the tiny, unexpected ways God works in our lives. We often look for God in the grand and obvious, but He usually chooses the humble and unexpected to do His most excellent work.

Reflect on three recent blessings—moments that initially seemed insignificant but were evidence of God’s love and care.

Don’t let the small wins go unnoticed—every unexpected blessing reminds you that God is closer than you think. What small moment today could be your reminder?

As we celebrate the unexpected, we strengthen our awareness of God’s presence in our everyday lives. It’s a reminder that He is with us in the mundane, small wins and gifts we didn’t ask for but needed the most.

More Than You Expected, Exactly What You Needed

Jesus didn’t meet our expectations; He came to exceed them. He was the gift we didn’t expect—a humble, loving Savior who offered not the temporary comfort of military victory but the eternal hope of salvation.

Like the Israelites, we often look for God in ways that align with our plans, but He shows up unexpectedly to remind us of His greater purpose. God isn’t in the business of meeting your expectations; He’s in the business of blowing your mind with something more significant. Are you ready for that?

Take time today to reflect on the unexpected blessings in your life. Consider the times when God answered differently than you imagined but better than you hoped. Choose one area where you’ve struggled to trust God, surrender it to Him, and take a step forward in faith.

Memorize Ephesians 3:20 as a reminder that God can do infinitely more than we might ask or think. And remember, the gifts we didn’t expect may be exactly what we needed all along.

Jesus didn’t meet our expectations; He came to exceed them. He was the gift we didn’t expect—a humble, loving Savior who offered not the temporary comfort of military victory but the eternal hope of salvation.

You Are the Church: Moving Beyond Attendance to Living Faith

You Are the Church: Moving Beyond Attendance to Living Faith

The Church is More Than a Building

What comes to mind when you hear the word "church"?

For many, it's the building they pass by, the place they go to on Sundays, or maybe the sanctuary they seek for some peace. But the church isn't just a building or a weekly meeting—the church is something you are.

The Bible describes the church as a living group of people, not just bricks and mortar. It's a movement with a mission and shared faith. Today, let's explore how you can go from just attending to being the church.

The church isn’t just a place you go—it’s something you are. Let’s live our faith beyond Sundays. #BeTheChurch #FaithInAction

The Heart of the Church: A Living, Breathing Community

In the New Testament, Jesus' idea of the church radically differed from how we often see it today. He didn't imagine His followers simply attending services and going through rituals.

He saw them as a living expression of faith, united to help and support each other. To understand this better, let’s look at the early church—the community described in Acts 2:42-47.

These early believers weren't just casual attendees; they were devoted to each other, sharing meals, praying, and helping one another daily.

This deep connection and care were called koinonia, a word that embodies fellowship, shared purpose, and community. They lived life together beyond the four walls of a building, and this distinction between being the church rather than attending the church made all the difference. It's the difference between checking off a box and living with real intention and purpose.

Commitment is the bedrock of real community. The early church thrived because they invested in each other, not just when it was easy. #Community #ChurchLife

Being an active, living part of the church means realizing that faith isn't just about a set of traditions or routines. It's about relationships—relationships with God, other believers, and the world around us.

When Jesus spoke about His followers being a light to the world, He wasn't just talking about isolated moments of good behavior. He spoke of a community actively engaging with the world and reflecting God's love and truth daily.

Commitment to the Foundation of Real Community

The word ekklesia, which we often translate as "church," originally meant "gathering" or "assembly." But this wasn't just a Sunday gathering. It was a group of people living with intentionality—united by their belief in Jesus Christ and a mission to share His love with the world.

Their unity wasn't passive or born of convenience; it was sacrificial and transformative. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus said that the gates of hell would not prevail against His church, and it's clear He was referring to the people, not a physical place.

Commitment is the bedrock of a real community. Today, it's easy to fall into the mindset of "joining" groups as long as they meet our needs. However, the early church modeled something different: they committed to each other—not just when it was easy, but even when it cost them their time, energy, and resources. Their community was about creating a family, a group of people who could lean on one another no matter the circumstance.

They weren't just interested in being comfortable. They wanted to grow, help each other, and serve others. They weren't looking for convenience; they were building something much deeper—a fellowship that made a real difference in each other's lives. This kind of commitment can transform a community, and it starts with each of us deciding to be fully invested.

How to Move From Attending to Being the Church

You might wonder, "What does it look like to live as the church today?" Here are some practical ways to embody this principle and move from being a mere attendee to truly being the church.

1. Make Prayer and Worship Part of Your Daily Rhythm

For the early church, prayer wasn't confined to certain hours on a Sunday. It was woven into the fabric of daily life. It grounded them and created a spiritual rhythm that unified them. How can you bring prayer into your daily routine? Consider starting small—like praying before you start your day or praying for a friend during your commute. These simple acts reinforce the idea that church isn't an isolated event but a relationship with God that influences every part of your life.

One powerful practice is to pray with someone else. This week, reach out to someone in your community—a friend, a coworker, or a neighbor—and ask if you can pray together. It doesn't have to be elaborate or lengthy. Prayer builds unity, deepens our connection to God, and reminds us that we're not meant to journey through life alone.

2. Build Relationships Outside of Sunday Services

True fellowship extends beyond a smile and a handshake during a church service. The early believers met daily, breaking bread and sharing their lives. They genuinely knew each other, and it's no wonder that their community thrived. Genuine fellowship means doing life together—being there for one another in good times and bad, celebrating each other's victories, and comforting each other in hardship.

To build these connections, take the initiative to meet with others outside of scheduled church events. Invite someone for coffee or have a family over for dinner. When you make an effort to create bonds beyond the walls of the building, the church starts to feel less like an event and more like a true family.

True fellowship goes beyond a handshake on Sunday. It’s about doing life together—celebrating, supporting, and growing with each other. #ChurchFamily #Fellowship

3. Practice Generosity, Even in Small Ways

In Acts 2, it says that believers "had everything in common" and shared their possessions with those in need. Generosity was a reflection of the shared life they had.

Today, generosity doesn't always mean giving large amounts of money; it can be as simple as sharing your time, talents, or even a listening ear.

Consider volunteering at your church, reaching out to a neighbor in need, or supporting someone through a difficult time.

Generosity brings people together, creating a culture of mutual care and empathy. It transforms our perspective from being church consumers to active participants in God's work.

Generosity isn’t always about money. Sharing your time, your skills, or a listening ear is just as valuable in God’s Kingdom. #Generosity #ServeOthers

4. Encourage One Another Daily

In Hebrews 3:13, believers are encouraged to uplift each other daily so they don't become hardened by sin's deceitfulness. Encouragement is a powerful way to embody the church—it brings hope, reaffirms purpose, and strengthens relationships. Imagine how much lighter our burdens would feel if we made it a habit to encourage each other daily.

Take a moment today to send a text, make a call, or write a note to someone in your community. Let them know they're valued and that you're grateful they're part of your life. Small gestures can make a huge impact, reminding us all that we're not alone.

Living as the Church: Everywhere, All the Time

When we embrace the idea that we are the church, we see our role in the world differently. Church isn't something you attend once a week—it's a way of life. It's embodied in your interactions with coworkers, the way you treat your neighbors, and how you show up in the lives of your friends and family.

The early Christians didn't compartmentalize their faith. It was the foundation of everything they did, and it's why they were able to change the world. You, too, can reflect God's love in your everyday life. When you bring the spirit of the church into your workplace, social circles, and community, you are helping to build the Kingdom of God—brick by brick, through every act of kindness, compassion, and service.

The beauty of being the church is that it isn't limited by time or space. It doesn't stop after the Sunday service or when you leave the building. The church is present in every situation where believers carry out God's love and care. Whether you're comforting a friend, helping a neighbor, or simply being kind to a stranger, you are representing Christ and embodying the true meaning of the church.

Being the church means reflecting God’s love every day, not just on Sundays. It’s a lifestyle, not an event. #LivingFaith #DailyDevotion

Conclusion: You Are the Church

Ultimately, you are the church. Wherever you go, the spirit of the church goes with you, transforming everyday interactions into opportunities to reflect God's love. It's in your conversations, your prayers, and your actions.

It's in the kindness you show a stranger and the grace you extend to a friend. Being the church means understanding that faith isn't just about what happens on a Sunday morning—it's about what happens daily.

May we be a community living out the call to love God and our neighbors, taking inspiration from the early believers who knew that genuine faith is never confined to a building.

May we embody the spirit of the early church, becoming a beacon of hope and purpose, showing the world the power of a unified, purpose-driven community.

Let's move beyond attendance and embrace the call to be the church—everywhere we go, in everything we do.

Happy Black History Month

As we observe Black History Month, let’s also turn our attention to the stories that challenge us to think deeper and act with intention. The realities of prison commissaries and the actions of certain individuals in the justice system remind us of the ongoing struggle for equity and justice.

In 2018, the Birmingham News broke an alarming story: Etowah, Alabama’s sheriff, Todd Entrekin, accrued $750,000 in income and purchased a $740,000 beach house.

But how? After all, his salary was less than six figures. The money came from budgets to feed people in jails. And it wasn’t technically illegal.

These stories not only demand our awareness but also call us to be part of the solution in our communities and beyond.

Have You Heard About Kindle Vella on Amazon?

In other news, I was selected by Amazon’s Kindle Vella platform to write an episodic series (fiction) called From Ashes to Grace: A Story of Unwavering Faith and the Rebirth of a Community. In ‘From Ashes to Grace: A Story of Unwavering Faith and the Rebirth of a Community,’ experience the stirring journey of Pastor Elijah Thomas and his congregation.

Facing their church’s near collapse, they tackle adversity to survive and thrive. This tale of unity, innovation, and indomitable spirit showcases their discovery of faith’s true essence in the modern world. Embark on their transformative path from despair to hope, where each challenge leads to a new beginning.

An episode releases weekly and the first is available NOW! You can read it online or on your Kindle. Let me know what you think. This is a stretch for me since I primarily write non-fiction books. However, with 20+ years pastoring, I experience just about all a church could experience.

Sermon Overview

In my sermon, I emphasized digital platforms’ vital role in reaching out to those distant from God. What’s the point of attending a physical church if it doesn’t truly transform us? The vision for our church is to embrace the digital age, using every tool at our disposal to help souls find their way back to God.

Next, I reminded everyone of the significant role technology has always played in Christianity. Remember the roads built by the Roman Empire? Those very roads played a pivotal role in spreading the Gospel. This led me to introduce an idea I’ve been pondering – the possibility of divine connections through digital means. And yes, we’ll dive deeper into this in upcoming sermons.

Additionally, I fervently believe that nothing, not physical barriers, should come between us and our worship of God. I took everyone back to Acts chapter 2, where early Christians built a thriving community without the trappings of physical structures.

It’s fascinating to think that it was over 330 years after Christ’s passing before physical church buildings even appeared. To me, this underscores the true essence of the church: community. Even though I haven’t met many of you face-to-face, I feel a deep bond with our congregation. This also reminded me of the unparalleled value of our personal moments with God.

Driving the point home, I stressed how crucial it is to harness modern technology, especially the internet, to spread Christianity. Just as early Christians utilized Roman roads for the Gospel, we have a golden opportunity to use the internet as our “Roman Road,” reaching hearts worldwide.

It’s intriguing to think that while many internet pioneers might not know Jesus, they’ve unknowingly given us a platform to spread His love and teachings. I wrapped up my sermon by teasing some exciting tech-driven initiatives we’re launching to bring more souls closer to Jesus.

Key takeaways (YouTube Timestamps)

The sermon emphasizes the importance of leveraging technology to spread the word of God and maintain a divine connection with Him, even if we are not physically present in a church.

  1. The sermon begins by questioning the effectiveness of traditional church attendance, especially if there is no noticeable change in the attendees’ lives ([21:56]). It suggests that a digital connection to God can be just as effective, if not more so, than a physical one.
  2. The sermon then discusses how the early Christians used the Roman roads, a technological advancement of their time, to spread the message of Jesus ([24:14]). This is used as an analogy to encourage the use of modern technology, like the internet, to spread the word of God today ([26:29]).
  3. The sermon also emphasizes that physical walls do not limit God’s presence and should not limit our worship ([18:45]). This reinforces the idea that a digital connection to God can be as meaningful as a physical one.
  4. Finally, the sermon encourages personal time with God, suggesting that this is when God truly speaks to us ([21:06]). This further supports the idea of a digital connection, as it allows for personal time with God, regardless of physical location.

In conclusion, the sermon encourages us to embrace technology as a tool to maintain a divine connection with God, just as the early Christians used the technology of their time to spread the word of God.

Daily Devotional

Day 1: “God Can’t Be Boxed, But Are You Boxing Him In?”

Reading: Acts 17:24-25

Devotional: Start your week contemplating the omnipresence of God. The day’s scripture reminds us God isn’t contained within walls or rituals. How does this truth impact your relationship with Him? Take a moment to ponder whether you’ve limited God to specific areas of your life.

Reflection Question: “In which corners of your life have you boxed God in? How can you expand His ‘living space’ in your daily walk?”

Day 2: “The Shape-Shifting Savior: Adapting to Share Christ”

Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Devotional: Today’s focus is on adaptability in spreading the Gospel. As you ponder the scripture, consider how you can become a bridge to different people to bring them closer to Christ. What tools and platforms can you use to share the love of God effectively?

Reflection Question: “What’s one way you can adapt your approach to share the Gospel in a manner that resonates with someone different from you?”

Day 3: “Zooming Into Faith: Keeping Community Close in a Distant World”

Reading: Hebrews 10:24-25

Devotional: Community and connectedness take center stage in today’s reading. How do we ensure our spiritual circles remain intact and nourishing despite our rapidly changing world? Dedicate today to pray for your community and explore ways to enrich these connections.

Reflection Question: “Who in your faith community needs encouragement or connection today, and what specific step can you take to strengthen that bond?”

Day 4: “Microphones Not Required: The Untechnological Truth of the Early Church”

Reading: Acts 2:42-47

Devotional: Reflect on the essence of the church as a community. Today’s scripture highlights that the early believers thrived without modern amenities like buildings or technology. What does this teach us about being the church today?

Reflection Question: “If all the church buildings disappeared tomorrow, what actions would you take to embody the essence of the church in your community?”

Day 5: “Your Digital Footprints, God’s Divine Fingerprints”

Reading: Acts 17:24-25; 1 Corinthians 9:19-23

Devotional: As we wrap up the week, look at the overarching messages. How can your digital footprint lead to opportunities for divine connection? In what ways can technology serve as a vessel to bring people closer to God? Spend some time in prayer, seeking God’s guidance on using technology to broaden His reach.

Reflection Question: “How can your digital presence be a beacon for those searching for God? Name one step you can take this week to make that a reality.

Mars Hill Baptist Church: An Ongoing Odyssey

Our journey with Mars Hill Baptist Church has taken us through its early establishment, highlighting its foundational pillars of faith, community, and innovation. As we proceed further into this third chapter, we'll explore the synergy between age-old traditions and the dynamic digital realm presented by "Mars Hill Anywhere."
