I am excited to recap last Sunday’s sermon.

As I reflect on the message I shared with my Mars Hill, I recall the vivid imagery of an urban landscape, where amidst the towering skyscrapers and the modern allure of Starbucks and Whole Foods, there lies a steadfast beacon of the past—a library, preserved by local ordinance, standing resilient against the tide of gentrification.

With its creaky shelves and worn-out chairs, this library became the setting for a modern-day parable of hope.

I told the story of Alex, a young man returning to his rapidly changing community, determined to rekindle a sense of togetherness among its residents.

Despite his initial doubts, fueled by the library’s antiquated appearance, Alex pressed on, undeterred, organizing storytelling events that would eventually draw a diverse crowd, transforming the old space into a melting pot of culture and community.

This narrative is a powerful reminder that hope can be found in unexpected places. It’s not confined to the grandeur of a Starbucks or the luxury of a Whole Foods but can thrive in a forgotten, humble setting like the library in our story.

It teaches us to appreciate simplicity’s beauty and significance and recognize that every individual matters to God, regardless of status or fame.

As I encouraged my congregation to shift their focus, to seek hope not in extravagance but in the humble and simplistic, I reminded them of their worth in God’s eyes. Each person, each soul, is precious and significant—I matter to God, and so do you.

In the spirit of conversation and community, I invited my congregation to join me in my ‘family room’ to engage in a dialogue about the hope found in humble places, much like the hope that emerged from the simplicity of Jesus’ birth [00:51] [01:42] [02:33].

Together, we unwrapped the gift of hope, discovering that it often emerges from humility and simplicity, exemplified by the most humble of beginnings.

Every individual holds a unique significance to God, and this truth challenges the societal norms that equate worth with material success. We are reminded of our inherent dignity and the inclusive nature of God’s love, affirming that each person has value and purpose, regardless of status or achievements. [19:16]

James 2:5 – “Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?”

Reflection: How does recognizing your worth in God’s eyes change how you interact with others who may be overlooked by society?

Day 5: The Subtlety of Hope

Hope does not always announce itself with fanfare; it often resides in life’s quiet, forgotten spaces. Like the stable in Bethlehem, these places can be the birthplace of new beginnings and transformation. We are encouraged to seek and nurture hope daily, trusting in its potential to change our circumstances and world. [04:11]

Zechariah 4:10 – “Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”
